LETS TALK ABOUT MOISTURISER

/ April 21, 2017

Everyone loves moisturisers and its always on my beauty list of monthly products to buy. Moisturiser is very beneficial for skin and I'm here to tell you why? So I do hope what I am about say ( well write ) helps you in some way to either understand moisturiser and why we use it or how to use it. Some people don't know why we use it, they just think its part of the routine but others know already.  I thought I clarify a few things for you.

What is moisturiser?

Moisturiser is a chemical mix that is used to soften the top layers of your skin and make them more pliable. Moisturisers are generally used to hydrated the skin ( basically add more water ) by reducing evaporation.
If you can find a moisturiser that has SPF in it, then you hit the jackpot. Most moisturisers now have an SPF.

SPF means Sun Protection Factor ( some people aren't aware of what it means they just refer to it as SPF and know that its good for the skin.)

Moisturiser basically protects your skin and what it goes through on a daily basis. From applying makeup, the weather conditions, emotions.

Why do we use moisturiser?

We use moisturiser to soften the skins layer and make out skin soft and smooth before applying makeup or after a nightly skincare routine. Simple as that.

Where to apply moisturiser on the face?

I always say your moisturiser is similar to your primer so apply it in the same place/way. Ill go by combination skin because I have that and this way works for me. I apply 2x pea sized amounts in the palm of my hand. The heat from my skin helps to melt the moisturiser slightly, I then dab it onto my skin on the t-zone. Making sure I have attacked the nose area, as that has places that is sometimes hard to reach with product. I then use small circular movements with my fingers to ensure it is evenly applied. I then spread any of the excess across my cheeks and towards my chin / neck. Only apply a couple of pea sized drops as too much can become either quite oily or make your face very damp due to the excess water from the moisturiser.

What is the best moisturiser to use for my skin type?

Combination Skin | I would suggest either Garnier Moisture Protect or Garnier Moisture Bomb

Sensitive Skin | Any of the Simple skincare range. The Simple skin care range is designed for anyone with sensitive skin, the formula had been perfected to help.

Dry Skin | Garnier Moisture Protect or Garnier  Moisture Bomb

Oily Skin | Neutrogena Oil Free Moisturiser

All the products I have mentioned above have been selected because they are the best high street moisturisers for each skin tone.

Not only is moisturiser is perfect for your face and for your neck, its also extremely beneficial for the rest of your body. Especially elbows and knees. Anywhere, where the skin can become quite dry. A thin layer of light moisturiser all over the body is perfect. Nivea do a lovely light long lasting moisturiser. You only need a small amount, as the coverage is brilliant and not over bearing.

Fragranced moisturisers?

People say yes to fragranced moisturisers, whilst others say no! I have to say I am on the 'no' team, I've never been too excited about moisturisers that have a fragrance to them, the chemicals of the fragrance can be quite harmful on the skin, you can have irritated skin. I would generally say, stay away from fragranced ones but I cant completely sway you away, its your decision.

Skincare routine for moisturiser

Always wash your face/ neck before applying moisturiser. As if you apply it before, well it would work and you wont benefit from that. Make sure your skin however is makeup and product free before applying moisturisers.

I think for now this is all I have to say on moisturisers, if you have any questions however please comment below.

So you have combination skin or think you have combination skin and you are slightly unsure on what to do or how to find out? My simple tips and tricks will help you. I have combination skin and I have perfected a skincare routine that matches my skin type perfectly.

So what is 'Combination Skin' ?

Combination skin is where you have a little bit of dryness and a little bit of oiliness to your skin. Normally found in your t-zone.

How to find out if you have Combination Skin?

Some people can immediately tell if they have Combination Skin but however if you are new to skincare, beauty etc.. It may be a little more difficult for you to figure out. The best way to find out if you have combination skin is to check if:

* You t zone ( Your forehead, down the bridge of your nose and you chin ) is oily and the rest of your face is dry.

* In the summer your skin is very oily but in the winter your skin is very dry.

* If you are on your period and you suffer huge breakouts on your skin and you skin is a little oiler than usual, then once your period is over your face clears up and your skin is slightly dry in the areas that wear rather oily during your period.

For me these were the tell tale signs I looked out for to double check if I had oily skin.

Causes for Combination Skin

People say its what you eat? , what you drink? Yes food and drink have something to do with breakouts on your skin however it isn't the cause of oily or dry skin.
Combination skin is caused by by overactive sebaceous (oil) glands. The heat and humidity speed up the sebum which causes oily breakouts on the skin especially in summer. Your face will be drier in winter for this reason as well. It also has something to do with your hormones as well, your hormones can cause over excess of oil around your t-zone area.

Skin care tips to help combination skin

* Clean makeup away with a Micellar Water. Garnier do a lovely micellar water as well as a micellar gel wash. You cotton rounds for the water and use warm/luke water for the gel.

* Pat dry your skin with a fresh clean towel, I then suggest washing your face with luke water as a second rinse. I have always done this, its something I was told when I was younger and then I have read many places growing up.

* Use a very light moisturiser on a night before bed in your t-zone and blend lightly out over to the edges of your skin. Nivea do a lovely light moisturiser. You only need a pea size amount, as it spreads across your skin evenly.

If you are on the go, I would suggest a Spring Water Spray by Avene. Its perfect for soothing the skin, refreshing, moisturising. You just spray a little bit over the face during the day and it should keep your skin feeling fresh so it doesn't dry out. I always like to carry wipes in my bag for combination skin, well only if I have no makeup on that day. Primark do makeup /skincare wipes for combination skin, normal skin, dry skin and oily skin. I love the combination skin wipes, so soft, refreshing. I like to wipe my face with them if I have no makeup on, it just keeps both the oily ness of the t-zone and the dryness of my cheeks at bay whilst I'm out and about.

I really hope you benefited from this post about combination skin, I wish when I figured out I had combination skin I had a post to read regarding it all instead of loads of different articles saying loads of different things from skin experts. I tried and tested what I do to cleanse and wash my face because I needed to know what I was doing was going to work and for me it did.

If you have any questions pop them down below.

Rebecca

Every one is always asking what the secret to flawless skin is and there are so many articles out there that say loads and loads of different things. Some are helpful, some are not. I read one article a couple months back that said the secret to perfect skin is lighting. If you are taking a photo then yes lighting is the secret to perfect skin. What if you are not taking a photo and you are out and about running errands? You want a flawless base. Well I can help. I have broken it done, so it can be followed at home. Everything I am about to say are steps I follow in order to create a flawless base of makeup with out being too heavy on the skin.

Have you got a pen and paper to take notes? Oh and a cup of tea.

It all starts with skincare. You need to find out your skin type: Have you got combination skin, Normal Skin, Dry Skin or Oily Skin? You need to tailor your skincare products around that. I have combination skin and I have a post going live after this post has gone out all about combination skin and the products and routine I follow.

I know a few people who have breakouts, acne, oily skin, rosacea and they have had to tailor their skincare around that as well. You can go to a dermatologist but that can cost money, so it could be worth while doing your own research, especially if you are on a bit of a budget as I know Dermatologists some of them can be quite pricey, not all of them however. I thought I would do some research and test the theories I cam across for myself and develop my own secrets to flawless skin/makeup.

So once you have your skincare routine nailed down which always includes moisturiser etc you then move on to finding out about what type of makeup suits your skin and is best for your skin.

I have an Ivory skin tone and I figured this out by testing foundations in a store. You can use the testers to test on your arm. Simply turn your arm over so your palm is facing the ceiling. The reason to test here is because the skin here is very similar to the skin on your face. Simply take a small dot of foundation and lightly blend it in and if it matches, that is the foundation for you. If you are unsure ask a member of the team from in the store to help you. Places like Debenhams are perfect for situations like this.

Primers are a major key player in the bid for flawless skin/makeup. There are many primer out there that can do the trick, recently however I have been loving w7makeups camera ready primer range. It comes in many different formulas and they perfect for all skin types. I like to use the camera ready original as it best suits my needs. There are anti dull, anti redness etc.. products in this range and they are well worth the looking into. I like to apply a primer in my t-zone and on the outer perimeter of my face. The reason for this, I have combination skin so that is the area that will be most effected by this. Only apply a small pea sized out evenly as sometimes depending on the weather that create problems.

Next is colour corrector concealers, now again I have found two brands that I love. They are w7makeup and collection ( formally known as collection 2000) they have either individual pots or are in palettes. Personally I prefer the pots , just so I don't contaminate the other colours. The green corrector is to cover blemishes and redspots, it simply takes away the colour and slightly take away the visibility. The lavender corrector covers dark circles and dark spots on the face. The best way to blend these in, is with a small fluffy eyeshadow blending brush. Using small circular movements to do so.

You then next apply foundation, I like to use thin layers of a full coverage foundation. I really like Maybelline and MAC for their full coverage foundations. Apply a thin layer over the face and neck, if you feel you need another layer then add another very thin layer in the areas you feel you need it most. Using a fluffy foundation blending brush, buffing in the product into the skin.

Concealer is a liquid form is best because you can buff it into the skin evenly. I like to use Collection Lasting Perfection in the lightest shade. I use this under the eyes and on any other areas that have blemishes showing through. I like to use a damp beauty blender to blend these in, the micro blenders are perfect for this.

Powder is the next thing and some people may disagree with this and others may not. I like to contour using talc. I use a triangle shaped sponge and I like to dab a little bit into the talc and apply it just underneath my cheek bone. I then take a fresh clean fluffy shadow brush a slightly larger brush this time. Apply a small amount on talc and apply it to my t-zone but my dabbing it into my skin and then buffing out. Making sure to take a small amount under the eyes to completely set the concealer. I like to then buff away any excess product.

You can then add your own bronzer and eyeshadow look to this flawless skin/makeup look.

I would like to however add these final couple of tips.

Contour your hair line, for me this makes my face/ forehead look slightly smaller and it can draw away from any imperfections.

Always take makeup off with micellar wash or gel and then wash your face with luke warm water. You can then add your moisturiser of choice to your routine before bed.

Use a clean toothbrush and some micellar gel to wash in between the cracks around your nose, eyebrows and over your lips. These are the sections where product can build up because people think that they have properly cleaned the areas.

So that's it, Ive shared my secrets on how to create a flawless skin / makeup look for yourselves. Remember I have tried and tested this to make sure it works and I now always get compliments on how perfect my skin looks or how perfect the makeup base looks.

If you have any questions please let me know .

p.s sorry its a really long essay.

Your style can change as you get older everyone knows that but what do you do if you're unsure on your style. You've not found a style you like or can relate to. Well I was the same, I never found a style I liked until I studied Fashion. Now I'm not saying in order to find your style, you need to go to college and study fashion and BAM there's your style. No. You can figure out your style in a few easy steps.

I like to look through magazines and circle things I like the look of, that I think I could get away with wearing. Then I find similar items in stores that I like. My style is very different especially if you compare it to the rest of my family. a) There is more boys than girls in my family b) My sister and mum have similar styles in clothing. I like ruffles and unusual items, that would look strangely at and walk away. That exact situation happened in Asda earlier today, I said I loved a top and they said I don't understand the fascination with arms on tops like that. So that put an end to that conversation. However if you are comfortable wearing an outfit that you love and feel happy in, who cares what everyone thinks right?

So yes looking through magazines is a good way to help your style.

When shopping in stores, I like to try outfits on. I like to check the material, check the fit, see if the colour of the garment suits me, if I can get away with sequins haha. Its all part of the process. I also like to take a photo of the outfit in the mirror. I am a person who likes to see if it photographs well. Well because why not? and I like to do fashion photography. So seeing if it photographs well is a bonus. I don't actually buy things straight off the bat of trying it on and liking it. I scour other shops first to see if there is one I like better or its in a different colour etc.. I way up my options. Well who doesn't ey?

The last way you can help develop a style of your own, is by channelling your clothes from your passions or hobbies. So if you like rock music, you could go down a route of leather jackets, basic tshirts. You love art, you could go down the stereotypical route of the tshirt, dungarees and converse. I mean I would, I love that style. Its comfy but stylish and on trend. Obviously you don't have to take that step but if you feel like you like to try and see if you can develop your style from your hobbies/passion then perfect.

For me developing my own style took two years, so it was quite the journey. My style evolved when I created my final major project to end my course. I loved cocktail dresses and the fifties/sixties, so my style evolved from that. Seeing as though I was on a makeup course however I went through the motions of trying to decide what I liked. It took two years of looking through magazines, going on the fashion website WGSN, looking at celeb styles, iconic fashion icons to find what I liked. Upon finishing the course up until the present day, there is still a strong presence of the 50's /60's in my style even though the colours / fabrics and trends have changed through out the years.

If you would like to know any more about my story on style or if you want to know anything else on how to develop your own sense of style. Then comment down below and I will be sure to answer all of your questions.

Todays makeup I kept quite spring and romantic looking with the flushed pink eye look with a bold red lip. I wanted the colours to blend but not to be too stand out ish apart from my lips. Lips and eyebrows have always been the features that stand out the most, due to my large plump lips and my large bushy brows. Both are natural by the way, I do get many questions on do I have fillers etc. Nope these lips are natural though.

MAKEUP OF TODAY

Todays makeup I kept quite spring and romantic looking with the flushed pink eye look with a bold red lip. I wanted the colours to blend...

When I'm not home I like to make sure my skin is hydrated , just as much as it would be at home. My products change and my routine changes but in a good way. My diet changes slightly but my product choice changes dramatically. I use products I would use in my normal at home routine.

Water

In my bag I like to carry a water bottle with me every where I go when I'm out, this is because I like to make sure I get enough water intake. It also means I don't need to buy a bottled drink when I am out. Water is great for your skin, nails, hair and obviously your body. Its important to drink around 2 litres a day, I fill up my water bottle during the day.

Light healthy foods

I like to carry snacks with me that are healthy and not dosed in salt/sugar. I am mainly liking health bars from Holland and Barrett, either their brands in store like Bounce or just their own branded healthy bars. Holland and Barrett also do Quinoa Crisps. That is one of my favourite snacks on the go. I also eat a lot of fruit during the day, mainly bananas or pomegranates.

Hydrating spray

I absolutely love the Avene Thermal Spring Water Spray, I have raved about this product a lot. I use it constantly whether it is to set my makeup, refresh my skin when out and about or if its to apply to my skin before applying makeup. The product is so refreshing on the skin and its not harsh, smelly. Its just the perfect spritz you need during a warm day.

Lipbalm

Is it just me that uses a tinted lipbalm for both lips and cheeks? I love using the Maybelline Baby Lips in Cherry on both my lips for hydration and super soft lips but for my cheeks to add that subtle natural highlight/blush effect without the effort. Knowing that your skin is benefiting from a balm product on the skin that isn't harsh, full of chemicals or smells.

Moisturising cream for the face and hands

I like to use NIVEA body lotion in the small carry on tub, I like this because it easy access, soft, hydrated, smoothest skin and wrinkles. If I am traveling and I don't have any makeup on, I simple apply this to my face, knowing my skin is getting what it needs in order to create a perfect, dynamic look. I apply it my hands as well, to keep these during the week fully hydrated, soft and smooth, without feeling rough and gritty. During the summer I often feel hands can feel gritty due to weather changes. I can also if I have my elbows and knees free for all to see, I apply it those areas also.

If you are wanting to know any more of my secrets to having wonderful hydrated skin on the go, just leave a comment and I will answer your questions.

I always get asked ' Why do you start a blog? How do I start a blog? Help I'm not sure what content to write about? ' When you first start blogging, yes it can be very, very scary, intimidating but fear not its actually better than it seems.

I was studying a Fashion and Clothing course back in 2010-2012 and in 2012 my first ever blog was born, it was called Move and Create, it was everything to do with my course. That shortly ended a few month after creating it, I was in a job and was due to start my Makeup Artistry course. I came back to blogging every now and then after this but I got back into blogging properly in 2015. I had missed it and I thought why not get back into something that I loved in the beginning.

I know that finding something to write about can be quite hard, believe me I have been there. I was lucky to have studied a fashion course and a makeup course, so I was able to write about two of my favourite passions, where as people find it quite difficult to find content to write about that they are happy with. Personally I think you should write about your passion, whether it be about beauty, fashion, sports, baking, cooking or even art. If you have a passion about geography, write about it, a passion for maths/science or technology you should write about it. My biggest piece of advice is to not write about something you don't like just for your work to 'fit in'. I wrote for years about both beauty and fashion but then all of a sudden beauty and fashion was all people would see, so for you to be unique and to stand out in your own way, my advice is:

* Be uninique

* Write about your own passions and not topics that 'will help you be seen' because you're more likely to be noticed for your individuality and not because you blend.

* Be organised - I wasn't organised in the beginning, I would just write willy nilly and about anything fashion related and for me it was a tad boring and then everyone brought the same content out. Try to plan when your posts are going live, do content that if you are a person wanted to find out the answer to a question , be that person with the answer that everyone wants to come to.

* Get up to date with your passion, know your terminology, know your trade/passion. Double check on facts, so you don't cause a stir because one piece of information is incorrect. I know to do this now, because when I first started in 2012 I wrote something about my pattern cutting lesson in college and I wrote some terminology terms down wrong with the wrong meaning by accident and I didn't pick up on it and it was an awful backlash.

* Be prepared for some criticism. Over the years, I have learned to grow a thick skin. This is because I used to get tied down with comments or with what people said about my work ect. Now I brush it off because if I stopped every time I got a negative comment, I probably never blog again.

* Choose a network to create your blog on that is easy to navigate / create in the beginning. I started off with Blogger and its my choice of network today and I couldn't change it. Its easy to navigate, easy to create a blog you want, its free. Its a super simple sight if you are just wanting to get started.

* Read up on information about blogging like follow links, seo terms. You can simply google each of the terms to find out what they mean. Most people haven't a clue when they first get into blogging what these terms are but once you know, you know.

*  Find your passion. Create content you would like to read.

I hope some of these tips will be super helpful for you all, if you want to ask any questions regarding this please let me know.

Rebecca

So isn't it supposed to be Spring right now, why is it raining, windy and cold. It's not fall or winter. I'm having to constantly wrap up at the moment and its annoying, I have so many floral prints and pastel clothing items right now that I can not wear. I have however just bought a gorgeous wool coat that you can see in this wonderful post for you. I had been scouring the charity shops about a week ago for some clothes and a few bags ( I like the vintage style bags you can get in there) and I saw this coat. I thought it was perfect for this time of year especially with the mix up of weather.

OUTFIT DETAILS |

Wool Coat - Charity Shop
Dress - Primark
Boot Heels - Primark

I can't believe the weather this week has been shocking, just constant down pour of rain. I wish I could have a day of sun. Anyway this week I have designed a new shirt that I love, I then bought two mens shirts from a charity shop and I made them into an outfit I love. I am wearing the shirt today and I have teamed it with ripped jeans, cranberry boot heels and fish nets. Yes, fish nets. Its strange for me to but I loved the outfit so why not ey?

For the past two to three years, I have absolutely loved w7makeup. The eyeshadow palettes over the years have just gotten better and better. These are the palettes that could be classed as the perfect high street dupes for MAC Cosmetics.

The packaging for this is similar to the Urban Decay Naked Palettes, its tin and it clasps shut. To shadows are in the similar layout to Urban Decay, the colours range from light to dark in the shades that match the name.

The colours in the tin:
Teddy Bear
Wonderland
Cracker
Happy
Lady Luck
Twister
Di Di
Delilah
Magic
Its a dream
Up in Smoke
Dawn

The shadows are very pigmented, the colours match perfectly with each other. Half are matte and the other half are shimmer/glitter. The beige/nude colours are perfect for a base colour that you can blend other colours together on the top. The gold is perfect for a disco ball look. The centre shimmer eye look.

I love this palette and you can get it for £5.99 from the w7makeup website, TjHughes, Savers. I'm not too sure where you can get it from outside the U.K but if I find out I will pop it on the end of this post.

Rebecca

So, if you're anything like me you've been keeping up to date with all of the trends for spring/summer. I have picked out some of the looks I have liked from a few designers.

So here we have La Perla, J Mendal, Oscar De La Renta. I love these looks for spring/summer especially because of the florals and the bridal looks. The white dresses are super pretty, elegant with such a bridal look it is stunning. The lace detail on the de la renta is spot on, its layered with a very structured look to it, boat neck top and the dress stops at your shins. The La Perla is such a cute wrap dress, the sleeves are perfect for this time of year.

The Giorgio Armani is such a bold metallic ball of fun. I love that it is gradient from white to grey/black in sequins. Dior on the other hand is such a structured look it reminds me a lot of architechture and the leather makes it all the more better. I love the white sleeveless shirt with the leather clasp vest. The Hugo Boss floral print dress is a dress I could see myself walking around in and running errands in. Its not the type of dress that I would go to events in, I think the Armani is more up my street for that.

Bottega Veneta, Alberta, Carolina Herrera are three of my favourite designers right now, especially since I seen these three dresses. I have an event in summer that I am going to, its like a BBQ Event. I would love to wear the Alberta its a gorgeous floaty lace print dress. The sleeves are the best things about the dress. The Carolina Herrera dress reminds me a lot of the Chanel dresses in the very beginning. Its so structured with the boat neck top and the structured printed skirt. The dress is definitely one of my favourites.

Hope you enjoyed my views on these dresses. These trends are super pretty and definitely worth looking at.
